How do you know where to start and does it really matter? Firstly, the term Arboroculturalist is mainly used as a general term of for anyone that works in the tree surgery industry. Really, it is just a longer word for Arborist. The best way to think of the difference between a Tree Surgeon and an Arborist is to think of your local GP. Your doctor is well versed in the field of general medicine. They can prescribe treatments for short term alignments, run an annual health check-up, help fix broken bones or bad backs and perform routine tests. The amazing varying shade of colour the way in which they purify our air, the homes they provide for our wildlife, and not forgetting the natural shields they form for our houses to keep out unwanted interest. As an arborist (tree surgeon) I am regularly asked to remove a particular tree which is causing a problem. Many don’t necessarily want to ‘remove the tree’ but feel they don’t have much choice. For instance, it may be blocking sun light, growing too close to the bedrooms windows or simply causing a headache (or more likely backache) from picking up the mess it leaves (see what I did there). I try to explain there are ways in which we can manage out trees and perform maintenance on them to reduce all of the problems associated with having a tree in your garden or grounds. A regularly maintained hedge will provide a thick full smart boundary to your property. Miss a few trimming sessions however, and you will soon have a hedge that has lost its shape and a more difficult job on your hands. It is much easier to give the hedge a frequent light trim than it is to give it an infrequent heavy prune. Regular trimming is also much better for the hedge. Some conifers, like leylandii, react badly if you cut into old wood, potential leaving your hedge with bald spots. When to cut hedges An informal hedge, one where the natural outline of the plants are preserved, will require a maintenance trim once. A year between spring and summer. A formal hedge should be trimmed two to three times a year during the growing season. Fast growing species may need a more frequent trim to keep the hedge under control. If you’re looking to buy a new tree, including hedging plants and larger shrubs, you will probably find you have three options:  Bare-rooted Containerised (this is, in a pot) Root-balled (usually having been root-pruned and wrapped in fabric)   Bare rooted trees and plants are usually cheaper than the other options and provide opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season, when they will be less distressed. If there is a long winter, bare-root season can be extended to early April, but we’d suggest not leaving it as late as that, so best to plan ahead when planting these type of trees. When you purchase it, your bare-root plant is likely to be between one and three years old. It should be wrapped in polythene or some other medium to prevent the roots drying out.
