Ways You are Loving Your Trees to Death – Mulch

Image
It’s hard to imagine that as society becomes more aware and proactive about saving our environment, we could be damaging the trees that we are working so hard to save. With the influx of information that we have it can be difficult to determine where we can help. One of the easiest ways to get involved is to properly maintain what you already have. In this series, we are going to cover several areas where people think that they are improving/helping their trees but may be doing more harm than good. These areas are mulching, watering, tree supports, and pruning. We will have an in-depth look at these common practices and discover whether they are beneficial and what we should be doing. Mulching – Too Much of a Good Thing Property owners’ willingness to improve their landscape has made mulching one of the most noticeable and effective methods for improving our properties. The Plant Health Care industry has flourished with the use of mulch and almost everywhere you go you can see...

Let the light through!

Image
Now that the season of spring and summer is upon us, most of us can’t wait to get out in the sunshine, start up the BBQ , have some evening cocktails in the garden., top-up on that Vitamin D! Our gardens feel the same, they need the sunshine to thrive so at this time of year it is wise to start thinking about ways to bring light into your garden. Increasing the amount of light into your garden can help keep your plants, tree and hedges healthy for the coming months. Sunlight and air help with disease prevention and growth. Trees are a big culprit of blocking out light, but you don’t need to have them removed to let light into your garden. The best way to bring some light through your trees is by thinning the crown. Crown Thinning will allow the tree to keep strong and will allow appropriate light into your garden. The most common reasons for crown thinning are to allow more light to pass through the tree, reduce wind resistance and reduce weight (though this ...

Bumpy Maple Leaves? Gall Mites Might Be The Problem

Image
Have you seen these bumps on your Maple trees? (Hope not!) Red, unattractive bumps, or ‘galls’ luckily do not cause damage to your trees, but sure look like they do! These red protrusions are caused by an insect such as the Bladder Gall Mite, or a Spindle Gall Mite which are found to be lurking around your trees early in the spring season. The red bumps are a result of the mites chewing on the tree leaves specifically in the growing season. These mites are aiming to stimulate new tissue growth in which they lay, and hatch their eggs. When the leaf is affected the symptomatic result is a chemically induced mass growth of abnormal cells. Funny enough, these little pests only affect three types of Maple Trees , Red Maple, Sugar Maple, and Whitebark Maple. Though the health of the host tree is rarely affected, the visual (cosmetic) health of the tree is commonly associated as poor with an infestation. For this reason, Melbourne Tree Removal Guys gets requests often to reduce the ...

Why Prune a Tree?

Image
A question I have been asked is ? If trees don’t get pruned in the forest, then why do we do it in the city??. So why prune a tree? That is a great question but it starts with an inaccurate premise. Trees in the forest do get pruned yet instead of a person doing the work, nature takes care of it. In a forest, trees tend to grow more upwards than outwards. They pursue the direction in which they can receive the most light. If they grew outwards that would infringe upon the tree next to it but since trees generally maintain healthy social lives they prefer not to infringe on the adjacent tree. In addition, branches near the bottom will naturally shed themselves early because their light is minimal and they want to make space for new trees to grow underneath them. Trees in the city on the other hand have a far less interactive life. They grow and grow on all sides with few other trees telling them to slow down. The result of rapid growth are a number of issues that hinder the heal...

Reasons for Tree/Branch Failure

Image
We hope that this in depth guide will help you understand exactly what you need to consider to protect yourself in the event that there is tree or branch failure. We also would like to provide you with 6 ways to protect yourself in case of tree branch failure as to give you a well rounded understanding as to what your own situation may be up against. Codominant stems If you have a tree with large stems/trunks similar to what is in this first picture then you have what is called a codominant stem . On a mature tree, it is at this point of attachment (or lack thereof) between each stem that increases the likelihood of failure. Think of it like this. Imagine two separate trees directly side by side to the point of touching. Each year, each tree gets thicker. The thicker each tree gets, the more pressure each tree receives from the other tree. Eventually the smaller tree can’t handle the pressure and cracks along this weak point of connection. Codominant stem behavior A codom...

The Neighbour’s Tree

Image
The one variable in most of these situations is the reasons why the customer is interested in the neighbour?s tree to begin with. Perhaps the neighbour?s tree has branches that are flapping on the roof.  Perhaps the neighbour?s tree is creating too much shade.  Perhaps the trunk of the neighbour?s tree is too close for comfort to the foundation of the customer?s house.  Perhaps the neighbour?s tree drops berries that your pet is allergic too.  Perhaps the customer is worried about branch failure overtop of their garage. The common question that customers ask us is,?Since it’s not my tree, what can I do about it?? There are two paths I like to explore with customers when they present this question: What is within your right to do? What IS the right thing to do? The straight, clear cut, simplified answer to question one is the following: locate your property line, create an imaginary line straight up, everything on your side of the property line can be r...

Top 7 Ways to Maintain Soil Quality

Image
Maintain soil quality for your trees simply by following this guide. The tendency when evaluating the health of a tree is to look into a tree?s canopy and see if anything looks a little bit off.  This approach makes sense because oftentimes the buds, leaves, and branches will offer clues as to a trees health.  Oftentimes though, the source of the problem lies below the ground.  What is happening above ground is a symptom, the real issue is down below. With that being said, here are 7 suggestions to maintain soil quality and ensure the ground underneath a tree?s feet are best taken care of: Avoid soil compaction A tree?s roots need oxygen in order to thrive.??If the soil is compacted then the tiny root hairs cannot get oxygen and roots can die off.?The soil underneath a tree?s feet is very much alive and active with a wide range of living organisms.??When soil is compacted, oxygen cannot feed these organisms and thereby the tree suffers.? 2...
